Subplots and Secondary characters in Things Fall Apart

With reference to Things Fall Apart, show how sub-plots or secondary characters contribute to the reader’s understanding and appreciation of the work as a whole. In Things Fall Apart, sub-plots and secondary characters play a crucial role throughout the novel. Especially in this novel, the protagonist, Okonkwo, is characterized to hide his emotions. In order to relate the readers' emotions to the novel, Achebe have chosen to characterize secondary characters to be more emotional. These emotional description from the secondary character contributes to the readers' understanding of the work as it further establishes symbols and foreshadows main plot twists. Adding on, the secondary characters tend to show various foils throughout the plot of Things Fall Apart. We can glean that these foils are placed to establish a contrast of Nigerian culture before and after colonization. Furthermore, Achebe's use of sub-plots further contribute to a firm understanding of the reader....

Fate and Free Will: The Thief and the Dogs

How does Mahfouz illustrate how fate is a major determiner of one’s happiness in life? Mahfouz, the author of The Thief and the Dogs, thoroughly present in his novel the idea that fate is a major determiner of one's happiness in life by presenting fate of the protagonist to be 'unlucky'.  One of major determination of 'fate' is the circumstances of the upbringing. The protagonist, Said, is portrayed to experience extremely unlucky situations where his parents both died while he was young. The 'fate' of his parents dying at an early age seemed to determine his later actions where he irrationally believes and follow those who give advice due to lack of attention he should have gained as a child.  Adding on, Mahfouz also allows the readers to accept the fate of Mahfouz due to the actions of those who were around him. This can be seen in two ways: the paths that the surrounding offer or the actions of Illish and Nabawiyaa that provoked emotion of reveng...
