Study of Literature in translation

Every language holds distinguished heritage where it reflects unique culture and ideas. Without translation, one will not gain the chance to learn the knowledge hidden inside the barriers of foreign language. However, through studying literature that is translated, one will be able to educate oneself with the knowledge hidden.

Moreover, these knowledge can broaden the perspective and open up new values that cannot be seen in one's original hometown. Thinking of the emphasis of IB, International Baccalaureate program, we can know why we as students need to learn literature in translation. IB highlights the importance of being a well-rounded individual along with studying and gaining information. Through studying translated literature, we can also know and learn the different values inside other cultures only through reading them in English, or else we will need to learn the language that the literature was originally written in.
In other words, studying literature in translation reduces time. On the other side, it is important to note that meaning can be modified or damaged during the procedure of translating. This all depends on the potential of the translator. According to the in-class reading, some might prefer the translation to modify the meanings in order for the audience to interact more, and some might dislike the modifications since it might damage the real meaning of the text. However, I believe that it all depends on the taste of individual.
